Darkness falls

“From the sixth hour (noon) until the ninth hour (3:00 p.m.) darkness came over all the  land.” ~ Matthew 27:45

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” ~ John 1:5

“What ultimately made trust in God’s goodness possible, in the face of so much evidence to the contrary, was the cross.” ~ James I. Cook in “Shared Pain and Sorrow: Confessions of a Secondary Sufferer”

“The decision to face the darkness, even if it led to overwhelming pain, showed me that the experience of loss itself does not have to be the defining moment of our lives.  Instead, the defining moment can be our response to the loss.  It is not what happens to us that matters as much as what happens in us.  Darkness, it is true, had invaded my soul.  But then again, so did light.  Both contributed to my personal transformation…  Though I experienced death, I also experienced life in ways that I never thought possible before–not after the darkness, as we might suppose, but in the darkness.  I did not go through pain and come out the other side; instead, I lived in it and found within that pain the grace to survive and eventually grow.” ~ Jerry Sittser in “A Grace Disguised: How the Soul Grows Through Loss”

“In the valley of suffering, despair and bitterness are brewed.  But there also character is made.  The valley of suffering is the vale of soul-making.” ~ Nicholas Wolterstorff in “Lament for a Son”

“When we plunge into darkness, it is darkness we experience.  We feel pain, anguish, sorrow, and despair, and we experience the ugliness, meanness, and absurdity of life.  We brood as well as hope, rage as well as surrender, doubt as well as believe.  We are apathetic as often as we are hopeful, and sorrowful before we are joyful.  We both mourn deeply and live well.  We experience the ambivalence of living simultaneously in the night and in the light…  In choosing to face the night, [we take our] first steps toward the sunrise.” Jerry Sittser in “A Grace Disguised: How the Soul Grows Through Loss”

As darkness falls in these hours as Jesus hangs on the cross, these are some quotes and thoughts encouraging me in my own darkness.  I hope they can be an encouragement to you as well on this Good Friday as we await the resurrection.  “O Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption.” ~ Psalm 130:7

Also, I’ve grown attached to this song by David Crowder featuring Lacrae called Shadows“.  Follow the link to listen to it.  “When shadows fall on us, we will not fear, we will remember.  When darkness falls on us, we will not fear, we will remember.  When all seems lost.  When we’re thrown and we’re tossed.  We’ll remember the cost.  We’re resting in the shadow of the cross.” David Crowder, “Shadows”
